Competitive intelligence (CI) has established itself as a strategic tool for strengthening decision-making, business competitiveness, and the ability of microenterprises to respond to dynamic environments; however, the diversity of models developed highlighted the need to establish criteria that facilitate their selection based on the characteristics of each organization. In this context, the objective of this research was to analyze the evolution, characteristics, and applicability of competitive intelligence models reported in the scientific literature between 2016 and 2025, with the aim of establishing criteria to guide their selection as an input for the formulation and management of sustainable projects in microenterprises. To this end, a systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA methodology, involving the search, selection, evaluation, and analysis of specialized scientific publications. The results identified models with varying levels of complexity, resource requirements, and implementation possibilities, as well as a conceptual evolution from approaches centered on information gathering and analysis toward perspectives oriented toward strengthening dynamic capabilities and strategic adaptation. As its main contribution, the study proposed a matrix of criteria for selecting competitive intelligence models, which linked organizational capabilities, the complexity of the models, and the strategic needs of microenterprises, serving as a basis for the formulation and management of sustainable projects; Consequently, it was concluded that the effectiveness of competitive intelligence depended less on the level of sophistication of the model and more on its ability to generate knowledge that is useful and applicable to the specific conditions of each organization.
